PAT testing

What is PAT Testing

The Health and Safety Executive define Portable appliance testing (PAT) as the examination of electrical appliances and equipment to ensure they are safe to use.

Why do I need to get PAT testing done?

Most electrical safety defects can be found by visual examination, but some types of defect can only be found by testing. Some insurers and parent organisations may insist on formal PAT testing .

Who can do PAT testing?

This formal visual inspection and testing must be done by a competent person at the required appropriate intervals, this will depend upon the type of equipment and the environment in which it is used.

Is Stephen Pethick a "competent person"?

Yes, I have been PAT testing since October 2006, when I completed training with Hampshire County Councils- Caretaking Support Service in Portable appliance testing. I regularly undertake refresher train to keep fully up to date. The equipment I use is externally calibrated annually to meet the required standard.

What does it cost?

The standard rate is £55 that includes a site visit and the first 10 items, additional items are charged at 50p per item. If I am on site offering other training or you only have a couple of items and can bring them to me, I’m able to offer a discounted rate.

Why do some companies charge £2 per item and you charge 50p?

I charge a low amount for every item e.g. a PC would be monitor, computer tower and 2 kettle lead totalling £2, an extension lead would be a further 50p to give a total of £2.50. Some companies will class the 4 parts of your PC as one item and the extension lead as one item total £4, beware that occasionally other companies will break it down to every item for £2 and you will end up a very large bill.

At 50p per item you will be able to work out your cost easily.
